Crown over W
What it tells you
Würgebohrung — a choked bore, literally a "throttled" bore. It is the rarest and most practically useful of the German barrel-type marks, because choke is the one barrel feature that cannot be seen once a muzzle has been worn, recut or refinished, and it determines what the gun can be used for. On a pre-war German shotgun the presence of crown/W is the only factory evidence of the constriction the gun was proved with.
What it does not tell you
It describes the barrel as proved, not as it is now. Choke can be altered or removed after proof, and in Britain any such change legally voids the proof.

Proof marks name the test and the era. The serial number, where a maker published a browsable chart, can name the year. The lookup cites the threshold behind every result.

Mark descriptions observed and verified 2026-10-14. Proof marks are stamped by hand on guns up to a century old; a photographed stamp and a description in a book are not the same evidence. If a mark on your gun does not match anything here, that is a real answer — see the notes on unidentified marks.
